Calf update

I'm already three cows/calves behind! On 10/06, a black cow with some white on her face (ear tag fell off) gave birth to a black calf. Then, #210 (above) gave birth on 10/07 to another black calf. Today, #214, (second picture) gave birth to a little black bull calf.

The one with the white face is a beauty.

I wonder... do the calves ever play with each other?

Do the cows, or the horses for that matter, ever have twins?

Oh, Wolfen...ha ha ha ha!!!!

CBA, the answer is YES: the calves DO play with each other...& so do foals. And YES, cows sometimes do have twins; horses too, but that is pretty rare in the equine world. It is even more rare for both horse twins to survive.

Now, for more info than anyone ever wanted to know: When a cow has twins, if one is male & the other is female, the female will be STERILE! It is called a "Free Martin". Do you feel like farmers yet?

Amazing. What is the scientific explanation for the female being sterile? is this always the case?

Maybe it's nature's way of discouraging multiple births.

Hmm. Reality show over-breeders, Beware!

If I see one more picture of Kate Gosselin on the cover of anything, I'll... I don't know what.

Did you sell the free martin you accidently bought?

Yes, poor dear went to the sale barn & was sold for slaughter as opposed for breeding stock (value worth pennies on the dollar). She sure did weigh a lot though.

I wish ALL my cattle could be sold for breeding stock. :(

If that is a Free Martin, what's a Frank Martin in scientific terms?

William Hill

Literally translated from the Transylvanian, Frank Martin means "He who is the friend of those in need of important name to drop in times of need.
