Fall calves
First calf, born 9/14/09 to #730
Second calf, born 9/19/09 to #657, shown with Dad, #369, in the background.
And no, I do not have that many cows...those are just the numbers they came with at purchase.
I'm so thankful that I don't have any heifers trying to deliver calves that are too big. I never want to go through that again!

Is now what you decided was the optimum time for calves?
Yes, I've always liked them to arrive in the Fall--that way they aren't born into freezing rain, snow, cold, etc. However, the problem is that about 1/2 the herd wasn't old enough to breed at the point of purchase, so that half delivers in Jan. - March, which is not an ideal time weather wise. Once the cycle is established, tho, it takes YEARS to change it unless you skip a year of breeding.
I know, TMI!!!
Does the Dad relate to his babies?
I mean, Yul Brenner did in The King and I. The King of Siam probably had as many wives and children as your bull.
What a good analogy, &, yes, as a matter of fact the bull BABYSITS his offspring. It's not uncommon to see him surrounded by a group of calves while their mothers are off grazing elsewhere. (Mama cows also take turns doing group sitting.) The bull is surprisingly gentle with his babies -- right up to the point where they start maturing & becoming interested in cows; then it's all over.
How very wonderful. I would never have thought it. Makes me very happy!
Is the stallion like that, too?
